About the museum

Meet the Celts, experience prehistory, and feel the city’s history.

The Museum of the Celts Hallein is one of the largest museums in Europe for Celtic art and culture. The prehistory of Salzburg and the city history of Hallein also come alive here. The combination of Iron Age cemeteries, settlement areas, and salt mining on the Dürrnberg is unique in Europe. Walkable galleries, insights into burial chambers, artistic gold jewellery – the art and culture of the Celts can be experienced in the Museum of the Celts Hallein.

The Museum of the Celts Hallein also includes the Silent Night Museum Hallein, which is housed in the former flat of the song composer Franz Xaver Gruber.

The Museum of the Celts Hallein and Salzburg Museum GmbH are working together under a management and cooperation agreement.

Roof renovation

In mid-January 2025, renovation work began at the Museum of the Celts Hallein. The attic will be converted into a new exhibition space called the ‘Kurt Zeller Forum’, which will be available to visitors for special exhibitions and events in the future.

Cooperation with the HOP ON HOP OFF bus tour – 25% discount
Tickets for the new ‘Blue Line’ (salt mines, Eagles Nest & historic Old Town Hallein) are available in the museum shop or on the Salzburg Sightseeing Tours website. The current timetable is also available there (note: no service during the winter months).
With a valid HOP ON HOP OFF ticket, visitors receive a 25% discount on admission to the Museum of the Celts Hallein and the Silent Night Museum Hallein.

Cancellation of booked tours
We kindly ask that cancellations of confirmed tour bookings be made at least 24 hours in advance. Otherwise, the Museum of the Celts Hallein reserves the right to charge a flat fee of €28 for school tours or €35 for standard tours and workshops per booking.

Discover our wide range of replicas of Celtic artefacts and other original souvenirs for young and old alike. The shop is open during opening hours and is available to you even if you’re not visiting the museum.
